When We Have Nothing

“There is a way of refusing that is so gracious… that the refusal gives as much pleasure as the gift.” – St. Therese of Lisieux

There are times when we cannot provide what is being asked of us. We may not have enough money. We may not know what to do or what to advice to someone. We may even think ourselves to be less fortunate than they are – more burdened, more in need of money or other things.

But must this be the reason to raise our voice or embarrass those who ask for our help? If we could not even be of help, must we worsen their problems by bringing more darkness and ill will?

We always have something we can give. We can give our understanding and respect. We can give our smile and our sincere prayer that they find the help they’re looking for.
Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. – Matthew 25:40, DRA
